We are talking about writing a book, but it may also be another form of creativity (drawing, painting, sculpture, drama, film, cartoons, music, etc.). Yes. It is possible to earn money by writing a book. Many people improve their living conditions by creating a work of art. You can do it too. Don’t let the word art worry you. In each and all of us there is a sleeping artist. At the Institute of Human Cultivation, we assume that any work is a work of art, and even a masterpiece. Provided it is a work rich in virtues. Virtues such as those we have mentioned at our Health page, in the section: Health of the soul. Writing-a-book: virtues It is understood that amoral and immoral works that promote hatred, violence, visceral racism, etc., not worth the trouble to be read, seen or heard. We have discussed the fact at the page: Health, in the section: Learning to read well. And while you're there, read again the section: Learning to write well; read them at: Health of the mind (mental, intellectual) Writing-a-book: negative criticisms Don’t let the word art worry you, we just said it. Do not be fooled or discouraged by some “art critics” who sometimes speak for themselves; for their belly; these "minor critics" who criticize just because they feel like criticizing. They criticize even when there is nothing to criticize. Those art critics don’t see a work of art as it is, but see it through their own point of view; they see a work of art through themselves. Result? Their criticism is biased; because it is oriented. In fact, these specialists of criticism already have a point of view to defend; an agenda to defend, before starting their criticism. And woe to any work of art that does not fit that point of view; their prejudices; their prejudged critics. You see, this approach goes against the scientific approach. It is a backward approach. We know that is not easy for some people to detach themselves from their point of views and feelings when they criticize. Yet it is the prerequisite for anyone who wants to criticize at the highest sense of the term. Of course, authentic and objectives art critics are welcome. But don’t be fooled or discouraged by some pseudo art critics who sometimes speak for themselves; for their belly. Writing-a-book: positive criticisms Of course, when someone has the desire to progress, he/she must learn to accept and give criticisms. As long as these criticisms are made in a constructive spirit: positive criticisms, not mediocre criticisms. It is good to listen to critics, but it is also good to think by yourself, and make your own decision: to decide if you have to change a detail or leave it unchanged. Writing-a-book: meaning of a refusal You may wish to publish your work. A publishing house may accept or refuse to publish your work. A refusal does not necessary mean that your work is mediocre. A refusal may mean that your work is not the kind of work that fit in the publishing house's mission. Some publishing houses have their point of view and a precise agenda to defend. Some publishing houses are propaganda houses. That's reality. That's the rules of the game. You have a work that promotes an idea, but this publishing house does not promote this kind of idea, here is your refusal. But don’t worry. This simple example illustrates our point: a refusal does not necessary mean that your work is mediocre. But a work can be rejected for technical reasons (composition, structure, mechanism, rhythm, etc.) In this case, you must revise your work; provided that the reshuffle don’t affect the intrinsic value of your work; the message you want to give must remain intact. Some publishing houses may revise your work, with you. Because drawing, painting, sculpture, drama, film, cartoons, music, etc., are also governed by a minimum of rules and basic techniques. These rules and techniques have nothing to do with your creativity, your idea, or the intrinsic value of your work. Responding to these rules and techniques will help you better express yourself, to better assert your ideas, to reach more people. Many of those who create such works of art are ordinary people like you and me. They are just people who dared to affirm their creativity; to put their skills, talents and gifts into the test. Writing-a-book: do you really want... Do you want to write a book? Sometimes you just have to take a pencil and paper or sit in front of a computer, to see the miracle accomplished before your very eyes. Produce a work of art: fantastic, romantic, comic, tragic, and so on. It is not necessarily a work of 1000 pages that is cherished by the public. An information product of 33 pages could do. See how some works of art such as: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Tom Thumb, The Little Prince and the Fox, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, etc., have enjoyed and continue to enjoy kids and adults. These tender stories continue to rock our imagination. Yet these works consist of a small number of pages. If these works have passed the test of time, with a few pages, it is because they contain some eternal truths. But these works have a hidden meaning. Think about that... You have a theme in mind, a topic that fascinates you, a hobby? You have enough to produce a masterpiece. As to how the public will welcome your work of art, the public will decide; and not necessarily those literary critics or art critics. And even if the public seems to ignore what appears for you to be a masterpiece, don’t be sulky with the public. Don’t be sulky with the public or yourself. After all, a work of art is also a work of game; the game of life. Take note that some works of art are ahead of their time.
