Learning to speak-well
The art of speaking, can and must be learned; in order to win useful victories. Like learning to write well, learning to speak well means also learning to communicate well. When we communicate, we must write or speak in order to bring a message and be understood. That's what an efficient communication is. Talking well means: to talk honestly with simplicity. A misleading or complicated speech does not pay in the long run. Some people think that if they talk a lot and louder than others, they will be understood and believed. It is a misguided approach. Of course, someone may have to speak quickly or raise his voice, in order to reach a specific goal. In this case, it is OK to do so. But talking to impress the gallery is useless, unless it is the aim of the speaker. While hearing ambiguous and complicated speech, the audience may say: "What does he talk about? His stuff is too complicated. What doest he hide? Maybe he lost his mind. We will hear him another time." Speak-well: Simplicity Nicolas Boileau said: "What is conceived well is expressed clearly, and the words to say it arrive with ease." This poet is right. Speaking well means: to speak in an appropriate manner and take into account those who are listening. The good speaker talks according to the content of the message to deliver and the goal to reach. It is fair to respect the intelligence of the audience. The right speaker is the symbol of his message. Speaking well must help someone to understand, to think, to take action, to succeed, and so on. While speaking, ask yourself how you can use your words to improve your live and the live of your fellow-creatures. It is very important to consider the laws of communication, if someone wants to make himself understood. It makes sense to avoid mistakes in grammar (conjugation, orthography, abbreviation, vocabulary, syntax, punctuation, etc.) These errors might change the meaning and scope of a message. Mistakes can create aversion in the mind of those who hear or read. These listeners and readers might withdraw their sympathy for the speaker, and avoid him as if he was these mistakes. Mistakes can change the meaning of ideas, thus interrupting the communication. We must be polite with a language, and avoid making mistakes. Those who are better than us in English will maybe notice that English language is not our first language. Actually English is our third language. By saying so, we are not justifying ourselves. What we say now doest not change what we just say above. We try to do our best. And we apologize for mistakes that you might find. We are looking forward to make it perfect. It will happen. However, we are sure that the essential of the message is there. It is the most important for now. But for the art of talking, other techniques must be taken into consideration. Speak-well: speak with your heart
Thus, someone who learns to speak with his heart touches the heart of his listeners. To talk with your heart means: to talk honestly with love and objectivity. It also means: Speak with authority Here, authority does not mean authoritarianism. Authority is based on competence, while authoritarianism is based on mediocrity. Authoritarianism uses brutal force and fear to convince, but authority uses virtues and show good example to persuade. Authoritarianism reflects poor thought and always leads to some form of abuse, dictatorship. Speak-well: useful and practical words To speak with no purpose is useless. Our words must be useful and practical. Our words must be able to bring something good in the lives of those who are listening to us. Whoever speaks must show enthusiasm in his words, be positive, be in good mood and speak with his heart. These advices help get the message across. Even a funeral oration can be said with enthusiasm. It is important to adapt each speech to each circumstance. Speak-well: clear, precise and short words Our words must be clear, precise and short. Complicated and ambiguous words reflect a complicated and ambiguous person. We must speak simply and clearly. Speak-well: with imaged speech An imaged speech colors ideas and encourage listeners to keep an interest. Vivid words are powerful. By illustrating your words, you can keep your listeners in suspense and awake... Speak-well: with humor Intelligent humour reinforces the value of what you said. Intelligent humor doesnt hurt anybody. This kind of humour shows love and respect. In developing your sense of humor, you want to respect the sensibility of those who are listening; religious, moral, cultural, political, philosophical sensitivity, and so on. Speak-well: make it simple We must speak simply as if we held a friendly conversation. Talk with simplicity. Talk to your audience; but mostly talk with your audience. Speak-well: silence and pose Avoid subjects that are out of the point. Keep the speech logical. Silence and pose attract the attention of listeners and encourage them to think... to think by themselves. Pose and silence help listeners to consider and reconsider. Speak-well: relax Stammering (stuttering), stammering out, lisping, trembling, the reddening and profuse sweating can be treated physically or psychologically. Most of the time, these situations are a consequence of fear and a lack of confidence in oneself. The control of breathing can help overcome fear and lack of confidence. Read the breathing exercises proposed in the section: Increase your strengths through the science of breathing. As in many other physical, mental, spiritual activities, and so on; what you think, say and do are important. Your thoughts, words and deeds are important. The way you think, speak and act is equally important. But what matters more is the inner attitude of the person who thinks, speaks or acts. In other words, the value of thoughts, words and actions is enhanced by the inner value of the person who thinks, speaks, acts or writes. In other words, a person who has a beautiful soul and a beautiful spirit will be more convincing than the mediocre who despise virtues. A virtuous person puts virtues in his thoughts, words and deeds. These virtues are both emotional and intellectual. Such a person is also convinced of what he/she thinks, says and does. That is why his/her thoughts, words and actions are very effective and reach their goal. For a kind of aura is surrounding these thoughts, words and actions. Nothing mysterious. Speak-well: with sincerity Like me, you have probably heard someone talking one day; and you felt wrapped with something soft and quiet. Something like music from above seems to coat what he/she was saying. Yet, his speech was not rich in grammar (conjugation, orthography, abbreviation, vocabulary, syntax, punctuation, etc.), or style out of the ordinary. But that speech was coming from a simple, sincere and loving heart. You said: "Unbelievable! This one is telling the truth. He has something good for me. Lets listen to him." Some people say that: "The way someone speaks worth more than what is said." Others say: "What is said worth more than the way it is said." We believe that: "The way someone speaks and what is said are equally important." But we add this: "The beauty of the soul and spirit of anyone who speaks, like an unshakeable faith in what he/she is saying, intensify the value of what is said. It allows a speech to reach its goal." This page is part of: Health of the mind
